Here are some thoughts I have been pondering for a few weeks now that I thought I would share and see what others here thought about this topic.
Where does cosplay stand socially today?
Matt sort of got me thinking about this s few weeks ago when he posted that article to his FB page reviewing Heroes of Cosplay. When I finally got around to watching a few episodes, I noted that the show indicated that cosplay has become more "mainstream" than ever before. But this seemed to contradict everything that I have seen and heard from others. Are they saying cosplay is more mainstream in the fact that more and more people are dressing up than ever before at cons? Or are they saying that it is becoming more socially acceptable?
Let me back this up and demonstrate where I am coming from in my thought process. It is socially acceptable for people to dress up for Hallowe'en. It is socially acceptable for a sports fan to dress up in his favourite player's jersey and paint his face his team's colours, and wave towels at a game, whether at home or at a stadium. It is socially acceptable to dress up to play a part in a theatre production. It is socially acceptable to dress up a child when they go to DisneyWorld.
It is not socially acceptable to dress up in steam punk and go out for tea. It is not socially acceptable to dress up like your favourite TV character and do a photoshoot.
Or is it?
Let me take it a step further:
It is socially acceptable to be on television and have a heated debate about sports, but it is not socially acceptable to do the same online when discussing your favourite characters from a SciFi show. Sure you can have a discussion about sports all you want, but bring up FireFly and how you'd love to see that come back, and you've immediately have been branded as a weirdo.
Ore have you? It seems to me that their are parts of society that have embraced geekdom, and others that have shunned it. Now I'm not saying that all sports fans are not geeks, because I know a lot who are both sports fans and geeks (my brother is one of them), but you get my point. With TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, geeks are gaining more and more notoriety, and it has influenced more people to understand and embrace the geek life. There are even "wannabe" geeks out there, which cracks me up!
But then you have those who just simply think we are odd for wanting to express our passions for our geekdoms. Oh they'll accept the people who get passionate about sports, but cosplay and scifi, forget it.
What are your thoughts and experiences with this? I'm not talking about bulling, just understanding and finding what is socially acceptable. These are just thoughts I have been pondering.
