I've been thinking about, at some point, doing a cosplay of Clara in Snowmen - the red barmaid dress. Only problem is, I'm pretty sure I can't buy a dress suitable without the heaps of money that I don't have, and I don't really know how to go about making one! Anyone got any tips for this kind of thing?

You know I've got something up my sleeve that I want to work on so I was going to post something along these lines as well (spoilers though, since I don't really want a lot of people to know what I'm doing until I know it's going to work). From a purely amateur point of view, have you checked out any blogs on the net with guides as to how other people have done it? I've found it really useful to look at how-to type blogs and it's helped me narrow down what sort of patterns I'm going to use. Y'know, if I get round to it...

On the Clara cosplay page, several people have posted tips. I copied down the patterns that someone said. They were all Truly Victorian. "I used the Early Bustle Ballgown Bodice and the late bustle August overskirt (I had both on hand already). The overskirt would need to be shortened. I also used the Late Bustle Four Gored Underskirt (without the extra pouf in the back), which also needed to be shortened. Patterns: Truly Victorian patterns (TV416 with different sleeves, a shortened TV365, TV261-R, and TV170)."
Although, I looked into those, and they're on the pricier side (I think for all of them it was around 40 dollars, which is why I didn't get them). The Clara cosplay page usually has a good bit of advice, and if you can contact one of the people who has made them before, maybe you could talk to them and see if they can help you out.

Everyone has their own method for researching and building their cosplay. It's a matter of finding the system that works out for you. As for making the barmaid dress, what is your sewing experience like? That is an initially hefty order if you have little sewing experience. Not impossible, just quite the endeavor And how SA are you looking to be? I've used several of the 'Truly Victorian' patterns and they are worth the price.
