Well I only cosplay at conventions because a lot of people are doing so. I can't cosplay like in public places like on a train or in a cafe as I get really nervous about what people thing of me.
Last year whilst at Nor Con was with some people also dressed in costume and decided to get something to eat so went to Mc Donalds since it was close. Well the amount of looks I got was a lot. I felt very uncomfortable and the staff behind the counter looked at me thinking I was some kind of weirdo. People sitting at tables looking at me thinking what on earth is he wearing.
I just don't have the confidence to wear my costume go public areas. Mind you I could perform on stage infront of loads of people no problem.
So has anyone here cosplayed like in public places like in the street, on a bus, in a cafe/pub?

I've dressed as (tweed) Eleven at my sixth form very regularly! People like it, even the non-Whovians. XD Going on from that, I wore my 7B Purple coat there, and people absolutely LOVED it. I recieved a barrage of compliments from teachers and peers alike! Personally, I guess I just like dressing smartly, and the various aspects of Ten and Eleven's costumes fit into that. From what I've been told, I seem to pull it off despite not looking like either of them! XD Oh, and I've also worn my Fourth Doctor S14 scarf, which also amused people due to its length... Boy, wait until this winter and when they meet my S18 burgundy scarf... XD

I mix some items in with my regular wardrobe, as I've mentioned before I also do 'casual cosplay' which are versions of DT outfits that he's worn at events or on TV, like the two attached, SDCC and the Graeme Norton Show.

I wear a lot of my Clara outfits to work, and as she wears sort of dressy casual, it works. I'm also very fond of my Tom Baker scarf like thefourtheleven. I wear it all the time in the fall and winter here, and I get a LOT of compliments. It's also my Whovian calling card, lol. I have met a LOT of other fans with it on!
I'm hoping to start doing what Matt does with his "casual Matt" look and start looking for Jenna pieces that she has worn for interviews and appearances, as she seems to dress nearly the same way all the time, which I love!
And don't worry about what other people think, just be you! When I went to Dragon*Con a few years ago, I wore my Kahlan dress all around Atlanta, and I didn't care, and most people thought it was cool. They also knew that the convention was taking place and I don't think they thought twice about it being odd. I think if other people outside the convention know what's going on, they're generally pretty cool with it. If not, well they stink, lol.

I tend to rotate parts of my Torchwood cosplays into everyday wear because they are pretty comfy and fit my style. And my great-coat is super warm, come Michigan-Winter time. Today, for instance, I declared it to be 'Torchwood Tuesday' and wore Ianto to work. The re-enactment groups tend to go out to meals, movies, or the like as a group in costume/garb. It helps promote our group, draw in new members, and generally we are too hungry and don't want to change after fighter practice to go get something to eat.

Well... it depends on the costume, but we usually dress up in the hostel and then walk to the place of the con, so... yeah, no big deal. People look at us, of course, but they're usually curious, not hating. And if we're at the con and we want to go eat or have a coffee or something, I have no problem going on costume. It depends on which! If there's a huge dress or so, I tend to dress up at the con, but only because I don't want it to get dirty before I reach the place

I'm pretty much always in Fourth Doctor gear. You call it cosplay, I call it "getting dressed".

I decided to wear my new Clara Christmas Special outfit today to work! I made the skirt last night. I had fun and it was a great excuse to learn how to use some more functions on my sewing machine!

So you have a Tardis in the classroom that you teach then? Awesome!

Yup! The kids love it! They often go into that closet and yell, "Doctor?!" Or they'll run out of the closet yelling it! It cracks me up. And the best part is they no longer call it the closet, they call it the TARDIS!

Oh my goodness your little TARDIS how precious! I'm almost always wearing something Amy-inspired, if not an actual costume piece. I also just started another blog where I answer questions as Amy, so it gives me an excuse to wear not only the cosplays I have, but also outfits of my own that I think she would definitely wear.

Well they no longer call it a Metropolitan Police box as the BBC and the police went to court and the BBC won meaning its officially called a Tardis now.

I once wore a Panama hat when I was in college back in 2006 with my everyday clothes. The amount of comments I got from my classmates, being horrible and fiddling with the hat. Eventually the weave started to become unwoven at the edge of the brim. I explained it cost nearly £50 and they replied "More like 50p". I was very hurt and not a happy bunny. I remember I'll never do that again.
Also in 2006 when I was dating this girl who lived in Essex I bought a Panama hat in a clothes store and wanted to wear it. Her father thought it wasn't really right a person of my age (early 20s then) wearing a type of hat like this and thought it was a waste of money. So I had to take it back to the shop I bought it from and buy a watch.

People just don't know how to appreciate anything "classic" anymore. My brother has been told that he dresses like an old man before, but I think he looks very handsome in his bow tie (he's been wearing them long before "bow ties are cool") and vests. He follows a page called "The Art of Manliness" which talks about classic looks and what it means to be a man. It's pretty cool.
So don't let people bother you about the hat. Heck, I wear my fedora on rainy days and get the Indiana Jones jokes, but I don't care, I know it looks great on, and my head is dry, and theirs isn't, lol.
