You know the type. The cosplay that you don't just wear, but you OWN.
Like Matt Holden and his 10th Doctor, or the other Matt and his 11th Doctor.
I was admiring a Joker and Harley Quinn costume the other day, and saw how they just OWNED their costumes. They WERE their characters! You look at them and instantly I think you see that it's the right character for them to be.
I only made my cosplay debut in June this year, as the 11th Doctor from his first episode, The Eleventh Hour, so I haven't had much chance to play around with characters, but I didn't feel it was the right character for me... Probably because the only thing I had was a costume, a prop and a few quotes up my sleeve. I'm of the opposite gender and have shoulder length ginger hair! Not quite right for that character in my opinion!
But I've now got this craving for having to do some of my own work on costumes... Not just buying something complete... For my Doctor, I had to tear the shirt, paint the tie (I'm cheap and couldn't afford the replica one!), and I made a clay apple!
I've thought about Amy Pond, but I'm not sure that her character is quite me... Sure, I can probably grow my hair a bit longer, and put on a short skirt, and rock it well, but I don't think that I'm right to be Amy... and EVERYONE seems to be doing her!
So, basically, the reason I'm telling you this is because I need help to find my character! It doesn't have to be from the Doctor who fandom. I roam the Sherlock, Supernatural, Firefly, Torchwood, Harry Potter, Marvel/DC and even Disney fandoms (among others).
So, how does one go about finding their character?
Do you pick someone that resembles you from one of your fandoms, or what do you do?
At the moment I'm thinking of working on a Charlie Bradbury (Supernatural character) cosplay (specifically one of her Moondor get ups!) as she's a geek, and she's ginger. Which is pretty much me!
But I'm not sure. I really do want/need to find a character that I can own, not just wear...
If anyone can share any tips on finding a perfect character for me, or has any suggestions for someone that they think I can do, I'd love to hear it!
Thanks guys
