I was chatting with my mum today and she was telling me how sad she was that I wasn't using my vocal abilities that I had gained in college to do anything. She had suggested that I start my own podcast. I liked the idea, but what to do it on. "Doctor Who!" she said. I was shocked at this because she's so NOT into the Doctor. She said I should go with what I know, which is very much Doctor Who and all things Sci-Fi. So I was tossing around the idea of doing I Doctor Who YouTube podcast. Should I do it just on general Doctor Who news and reviews, or should I do it more specifically on cosplay. OR should I do it on something more general, such as sci-fi. My blog (which I'm bad about keeping up with) is all about everything nerdy, should I stick with that? I'd LOVE ideas, because it would be a great summer project to start on and go with. Please tell me what you guys would like to see, because ultimately, it's fans that would drive content. Thanks!

If you ask me, I think you should find where you know you have something to add to the discussion, especially when that something is unique to you. There are tons of sources for Doctor Who information and a billion and two reviews out there, and having gone through the backlog of your blog, you have a very engaging writing voice, which I bet you could translate quite easily to a podcast. But ultimately, you're working with a venn diagram of your topic, your audience, AND you. Your audience will be able to find a million and one Doctor Who/sci-fi podcasts, but they'll only be able to find one you.
As for the focus, I would probably recommend starting with Doctor Who and whatever you want to talk about with that, and if you know that that happens to be 90% cosplay then you should present it as such. That way, your audience knows what to expect and it's general enough that if one set of topics within that falls through you'll still have options. Personally, I wouldn't go as general as sci-fi, because if it goes well you can always expand or even make a second podcast for that, but I feel like sci-fi is such a broad topic that unless you're talking about the idea of sci-fi itself, you're going to have a harder time getting people to stay and listen. Like, there's a lot of sci-fi out there, but I'm not interested in all of it. If I happened across a new youtube channel on Doctor Who and I wasn't sure whether I'd end up liking it or not, I'd probably subscribe to keep an eye on it. If it were on general sci-fi fandoms, I'd probably say "I'll come look at this later" and then quite probably forget all about it. But that's just my experience, so maybe you should ask around and see if you can find a lot of people who feel otherwise if you think you want to just talk sci-fi in general.
But now ignoring what seems vaguely like it'd have more general appeal and talking about just what *I'd* like to see, personally I just like reading your blog and hearing you talk about your experiences. I mean I like that in general. I spend waaaaaaaaaaay too much time reading random people's write-ups of their convention experiences. I mean as long as they aren't a complete jerk I don't really care who it is. Also in the cosplay vein, I really like hearing about how people get their costumes together and how it was getting to wear them and just why they wanted to do that costume and that character. And tips and tricks are always great, yeah, but they go down so much better when there's background to them, and when you as the reader have that reference, even if it's just a few lines of an anecdote.
(Sorry if this is incoherent or sounds I don't know arrogant or something but it's late and I'm sleepy and I'm feeling too lazy to read back over anything I've said.)

Thanks, claireish, that really helps a lot. I think I'm going to go the direction of Doctor Who news, events, reviews, cosplay, and cool finds, just like my blog tends to be. I'll give insight into the fan community, and tips and tricks when I can. I'd also like to have guests chime in from time to time, like Matt Holden and other people from the cosplay and fan community, to give their insight. I'm hoping to start this week I think, I just have to gather my material that I'd like to cover. I'm really inspired by YouTubers like TheJwittz (a Pokemon/Nintendo podcaster) who are really passionate about what they do. His Top Ten lists are always a hit, and I'd love to try deliver something along those lines. I'm not aiming for fame, I just want to do this for fun and for fans. I really miss my broadcasting days, and it would be really nice to put my video skills back into practice.

Great job! Hope you've got a couple subscribers by now. I'd go do that right now, except I already have and I don't think youtube lets you do that twice.
