I'm looking at making Clara's Cold War dress but I'm not quite sure what material to use. It looks like a satin to me but I thought I'd ask more experienced eyes. If it is satin would I need to line it? Help!!!

Do you have a decent pic/screen cap of just the dress (no coat)? Google keeps turning up images with the coat and its making it tough. >.<

I have a couple of pictures because I'm planning on undertaking this project in the near future as well. This is the best one I have without a jacket. And another one, with the jacket, but it shows a decent amount of the dress as well.

I saw a jacket on ebay like that yesterday. might be a nice touch to finish the costume? (I was looking for naval coats for a Captain Haddock costume )

Thanks for all the help guys! Does the skirt look like a puffball hem to you or just a normal hem?

That hem looks like it has a slight bubble/puffball hem to it. Nothing extreme, just a little bit. Never heard it called a puffball hem before, I had to google it to be sure it was what I thought it was lol

Might be an English thing lol. Thanks for the help, I have a pattern that I'm going to modify but it's my first dressmaking project so I'm a little nervous. I would just go straight for it but I don't want to mess it up :/

Make a mock up in a similar fabric first. This will let you know if you need to change something along the way and is almost like practice for the real deal.

I think I'll do that, thanks for the advice. What fabric would you recommend for a mock up? I feel a little out of my depth but in determined to try

Another type of satin that has the same drape as what you plan to use. It can be a cheap satin from the bargain bin.
