Yes, I am indeed back with more questions about the top I created for the Idris cosplay. For my very first sewing project it came out OK, however, I erred on the side of caution and made it sliiiiightly bigger than it needed to be. Not much, only just. The top is all sewn together, no fastenings, and as it currently stands it fits over my head - but just. I want to make it smaller for a better fit so I'm going to need to add a fastening because once it's smaller it's not going to go over my head. So there's a few options I've been thinking over, but since I've not reallly done anything like this before I need advice on which is the best...
Option one is to rip the seam down the back and fit a zip and then adjust the rest of the seams until it fits better. Downside here is that there's then going to be an ugly zip down the back.
Option two is to add lacing. I'm fairly sure I can work out how to do this. My reasoning for this is that there wouldn't be that zip hanging around back there and that, possibly, I wouldn't then have to alter the other seams as I could just tighten the ribbon. I don't think I'd have to destroy the back seam for it either as I'd still be able to fit it on over my head before adjusting it.
Option three, buttons? Hook and Eye? Probably some seam altering to be done with this option.
So do you have any other ideas on how to solve my problem?
(Option four - give up and buy a corset top. Downside here is there really aren't any out there that I've found that match well to the material/colour/pattern. I'm not a stickler for screen accurate stuff but I'd like it to look as close as I can. The other downside is that I'm proud of what I've managed to do with my limited skills so I'd really like to keep what I've done...not discounting a remake at a later date).

The hook and eye is a good option because it hides well. With the zipper, you could also add a strip of fabric to the side of it to flip and cover over the zipper, then attach velcro to that so that it stays put.

Adding zips suck until you learn how to do it properly. I've been sewing for over 10 years and I still suck at using them. Plus it sounds like you would really rather NOT have to use them. Plus, generally you need extra seam allowance to add a zip than you have probably allowed in your back seam. I second Clara's hook & eye recommendation. They make hook & eye tape that can be easier sewn into the seam allowances of your back seam. It won't be quite as stable or supportive as a zip, but it sounds like you are just trying to accomodate for extra fabric, not add stress/support. Plus, with hook & eyes, you can adjust the fit of them much better for an overall better fit. Good luck!

You're right, I would really rather avoid the zip drama. Thanks for the ideas :-) I'm aiming to get it all out sometime next week and have a look at what needs to be done. I've just been a bit lazy about it all this week. Woops.

Took the bodice over to a friend's house for some help/an extra pair of hands. So it's now been adjusted to fit better, tacked ready for machining. She also took a several inches out of a seam at the back and that's ready to have hooks and eyes added. We also started adding the lace to the front bit. All in all a bit of a productive weekend :-D

Updating this rather than starting yet another thread about this costume - Machined all the bits that needed machining, but my machine is 40+ years old so some bits may need redoing in the future. Then once it was machined I got incredibly frustrated with the fit of it and ended up ripping out the entire back seam to fit in hook and eyes to get it a bit tighter. I've ordered eyelets so I can lace it to hide the messy crossover at the back more than anything. I'm also going to take in the side seams a bit more because I've got a weird wrinkle showing up there. I'll post some pictures when I get home.
At some point in the future, when I'm a bit better off in the bank, I think I'm going to have someone make up the bodice for me using better material and boning. We'll see how it turns out in the end.
