I am going to make my own Name of the Doctor Dress and I was wondering if anyone was interested in me posting my step by step process along with photos. If so I'll be starting on that project next week (I'm using the dress as an example of laying out a pattern and altering it for a dress.)

Excellent! I just purchased the materials and have started cutting out the pattern. Okay here we go! Clara's Name of the Doctor Dress Part 1What you will need:The pattern I am using is Simplicity's Misses' Jiffy 1960's Vintage Dress I will be modifying it slightly. I am also opting no to make sleeves as I found a great polo to wear under it. However, if you choose, there is a collar option on the package, all you would have to do is add your own short sleeves. This pattern in store cost me $17.95 before my 40% and teacher's discounts were applied. The material I am using is Joann's Plaiditude in Brushed Cotton Navy, Green & Yellow. Follow the guide on the back of your pattern for how much material you'll need. I am choosing to make mine in a size 8 so I needed 2 1/4 yards. If you're not on a tight budget, Spoonflower has a great alternative pattern that is more screen accurate. As I am also using this dress as a sample for my Home Economics class, I do no have the time to wait for that material to come in, however, I think that is most likely your best bet as far as pattern accuracy. You will also need one invisible zipper in black, and if you choose, black or dark navy material to line your pockets and zipper on the back of your dress. I already had some black material as remnants in my material collection, but Joann's usually has a bucket of remnants you can dig through for your shade. I'll have more after I have started my next step, that will give others time to get materials if they want to sew along with me!

The dress is done! I'll have photos and more step by step up later either tonight or tomorrow. I'm beat! It was quite a project, but I am pleased with the outcome. I think I might make another using the SpoonFlower pattern...if I get paid to do it, lol.

Dress part 2
Pretty much just follow my photos if you are an advanced sewer. If you are not, just follow the pattern directions for similar results. Cut out your pattern, and get rid of the pleat section: Lay out your pattern. Cut out your pattern. I modified it at this point. Please see pictures to see how I did this. Make sure the modified sides are done on a diagonal and lined up correctly. After pinning, go ahead and sew. Make sure your facings are on the correct side first! (I didn't and had to fix it!) Attach sides and top together. Attach invisible zipper to black fabric. Attach this to the dress, with the zipper tape on the inside of the garment. Hem the bottom of your garment and tack the facings to the inside seams. If you wish to make the pockets, I made them 4in long, and 9in deep (Long enough for my cell phone). After cutting the black fabric, I attached the fabric to the opening I cut (which was about 6 inches down from the waist. I left enough showing at the top and then sewed the back plaid fabric to the back of the cut, then sewed the pocket sides together on the inside of the garment. I hand tacked the top of the black parts of the pocket. Vola! Dress completed! Just add your own black on navy polo! Please feel free to ask me questions as I know I wasn't wicked detailed!
