My girlfriend was showing her mother on Monday photos of her dressed as River Song as she looks in the Impossible Astronaut next to someone who was dressed in 8th Doctor's new costume which an male Ace cosplayer and her mum thought it was so funny she was laughing and was holding herself incase she wet herself. Now she called her husband in and he laughed as well. I think this is cruel. I think my girlfriend's parents think this is weird for her to do and to get into fandom's. Actually here is the photo: Has anyone ever taken the fun or been nasty about you cosplaying?

It's sad to say that this is far too common, you only have too follow a cosplay page for a short while to read multiple negative or frankly inappropriate comments, it's one of the reasons why I always walk on the edge of the cosplay community as I simply do not have the time or the patience for it.
If people have a creative hobby (which cosplay is) then it should be supported and nurtured. If an outfit isn't 100% then this should not be an excuse to ridicule people.
I've had negative comments in the past, luckily I'm very thick skinned so they just bounce off me (sticks and stones can't break my bones so do you really think I'm bothered about words... - Superman).
Looking at George's example above I'm quite disappointed in the actions of his GF's parents. What's wrong with dressing up? Surely it's better than going out getting drunk and beating up old ladies??
Anyway, back to the topic. In my opinion it is never acceptable to be cruel to someone's efforts of to laugh as them, this is also why I avoid things that look for 'the best' of anything, because where there is a best there must be a worst...
To me cosplay should be a fun hobby and the only person who you should compete against is yourself, to improve what you do and make yourself better. If people like your stuff fantastic, if they don't then it's their loss and if they can help you improve via constructive feedback then brilliant!
That is one of the main things I like about this community, the fact it is a community and the members are positive towards each other, there is too much negativity in the world let alone the cosplay community!
Anyway rant over...

Preach it Matt! I agree, it's never okay to make fun of anyone who cosplays. I know my mum never understood my love for costuming, but once she realize that I was actually decent at it, AND I was making money selling costumes, she started respecting me for it and began to even admire what I had created. I do hope your girlfriend's mum comes around and starts to understand that we're just people out there having fun.

This is one of those cosplay topics that I 'get on my high horse' about and am known to rant on. This and needlessly sexualised cosplay, two topics I should not be allowed to talk about...

Did you ever get to watch Heroes of Cosplay? I finally watched the first one...yeah I'm not sure what to say about it. I have both negative and positive things to say. I might have to stick with watching Face Off.
And as a woman, I appreciate that you do have strong opinions about needlessly sexualized cosplay. I wish more people did.

One of my mates is going to dropbox all the eps to me. I think I may marathon it at the weekend (this may not be a good plan, especially for my sanity...) As for 'Tits and Ass' cosplay I look at it and think what's the point....

What really winds me up is when other cosplayers tear down someones costume, there is just no need! If people all share the same hobby they should enjoy and support what other people do not pick fault in everything just because they can.
For me I love meeting other cosplayers and if asked will happily give advice and support. I've seen cosplayers walk up to other cosplayers and point out every fault in their outfit (all too common in the DW fandom!)
I'm going to stop typing now before I go into another rant...

Yeah I was really upset when Becky my girlfriend told me this. Why can't they understand what she is doing is fun. Its harmless. I hate it when people look down at other people for being a fan of something. They think being geeky is a bad thing. I myself love being a geek and embrace it. I love cosplaying and will always continue to do so. Mind you why other people have to laugh at others cosplays I don't know.
The last convention I went to a mother turned to her son and said about my series 6 eleven doctor cosplay ''oh look he isn't wearing boots or the g star raw jeans.'' I was infact wearing boots and those jeans are like £90 to buy new and are rare and I didn't really want to spend too much money then because of the convention. I was hurt by this comment but said nothing.

Firstly - Heroes of Cosplay - AVOID. DREADFUL.
Secondly - be PROUD of who you are, in and out of cosplay. It's about who you want to be, what makes you happy, and to be frank, sod the rest of them. People poking fun and laughing is hurtful and cruel, but most of this is jealousy that they lack the courage to do what you're doing, and have a great time with your passions. You're being brave and amazing enough to be who you want to be, and to pay homage to a character you can identify with. No-one should have the power to belittle that for you. So don't give them that power. Turn around and walk away, say nothing and know you are completely brilliant for following your heart and doing things that make you happy.

Re: Overly sexualised cosplay -- unfortunately, it happens in the DW Cosplay community as well, which really, really upset me a while back. I was on the LFCC group on facebook and I just said something along the lines of "I'll be there as Amy, would be great if someone took some pictures of that!" and some 'photographer' dude was like, "if you do Kissogram Amy I'll definitely take pictures of you " which. Wow. No. Creepy. 'cause let's be real, that outfit IS quite sexy, isn't it? Plus, God knows if people have police/uniform fetishes and what not, lmao. As for people making fun of cosplayers.... It's rude and unnecessary. Like Matt said, would getting drunk and beating up old ladies be a better hobby? Plus, I've been an actor all my life... I'm kinda not bothered if/when people make fun of me for dressing up and playing a part, haha.
