So, since my venture into cosplay, my husband has decided to follow, and he chose Captain Jack Harkness. I've easily sourced the majority of the costume, but am still trying to find the coat and the boots. The only ones I can find cost a hundred or more. Any less expensive alts to be had?

The Coat
I 'made' my coat using a wool great coat I found at a thrift store for $15. It is a charcoal grey instead of the dark heather blue-grey of Jack's coat, but most people don't notice, plus it already has the darted lapels and fits really well. From there, I procured, anitqued and added the replica RAF buttons at the breast and cuffs, made and added the epaulettes with the Group Captain braid, and cut in the high back venting (I couldn't work out the top venting without completely taking the coat apart). And its a great 'super hero' length for my 5'8" frame. All in all, I definitely paid less than $100 for the whole thing, and still have a good bit of the Group Captain braid left if you need to procur some. The BootsAs for the boots, the 'Luke' style Catepillar boots used for Jack have been discontinued, but there are similar style boots out there. I have a pair of Sketchers 'Roven' style boots coming today or tomorrow, so I'll post pics of them once they arrive.

Cannot stress enough how awesome thrift/charity shops can be! And not just for cosplay stuff. I've seen some great Jack stuff in some of the London markets but I'm sure there'll be some around your area too. I'm always nipping into charity shops on my way home from work to see what's in (got a great vintage dressing table for £50 as an aside).

I don't know if they have them in your area, but there's a store called Hut no. 8 (pretty sure it's national. I know there's more than one)and it's amazing. It's name brands for super cheap. I've gotten...probably about 90% of my cosplays from there. Both of my Doctor jackets, my Sherlock, all of my Clara pieces except for a few(including a wicked awesome alt for her parka). And right now they're taking winter stuff, so there are some excellent odds of finding a good coat.

Definitely seconding Thrift Shops! Another suggestion would be to do a quick google search to see if there's an Army/Navy store anywhere near you. I live in Philadelphia and we have one called Goldbergs, and they have a basement full of surplus military gear from all sorts of time periods/countries! They do have a website that you can order from as well, although I'm not sure how far they're willing to ship since I always just go to the store itself. Also, if any Clara's are looking to do Cold War, they've got some great options for that as well!

If you're still looking for Harkness boots, the screen accurate Miracle Day ones aren't very expensive and they're relatively easy to find.
